Following is some information about the class and attached is a full description including information about the trainer.
Based on Triathlete magazine recommendations:
Tri-Strength Training:    “A properly designed strength-training routine is an essential component of an endurance program, and should be followed throughout the entire training and racing season.  It is not an “extra” to your swim, bike and run training- it is a fundamental part of your overall program.”
                                                                                                                 ~ Triathlete magazine, March 2013 ~

Kevin Prendergast is a marketing consultant with financial services clients in the Des Moines area and Atlanta, and partner in a silk-screen printing company.  He and his wife Kathy live in the Saylorville area and have two married sons and 4 young grandkids.  Kevin is very active in his church, Capitol City Baptist Church in Saylorville, serving as board chairman and teaching a Bible study with “nearly and newly” marrieds.

Kevin became involved in triathlon after his church sponsored a 5k run.  He had a bet with Pastor Mark and began running again (after a looong break from high school track).  His first tri was the Cy-Man in 2006 where he admits he had no idea what he was doing, and was tempted to ask if he could bring a lawn chair into transition.  He and Mark then joined the TriRacer program at the Ankeny Y and TriRacers club.  He learned so much from the training and club members that he did the Hy-Vee Tri and was hooked.  He did all of the local races and then stepped up to Ironman 70.3 races in Branson and then Racine WI.  Last year he decided it was time to do the Ironman as he wasn’t getting any younger.  He and son Kyle did the Florida Ironman in Panama City Beach, FL in November, 2012.  Kevin is quick to tell others that if he can do it, anyone can do it, if you’re willing to train.  He has encouraged numerous people to do triathlons, putting together 10 tri teams of people new to triathlon over the years.    He plans to do all of the local area races as well as the Kansas Ironman 70.3 in June and qualified for the Hy-Vee U.S. 5150 Championship for 2 reasons, he claims:  Half of those in his age group use canes or walkers… but really because another TriRacer was hollering encouragement at the end of the race last year when he was ready to walk a bit on the last hill. He managed to pass one more person in his age group which was how he qualified for the championship this year.  That’s what being a TriRacer is all about—encouraging each other and helping each other any way we can.

New Club Secretary February 19, 2013

As you can tell we have a lot of new faces on the Tri Racers board.

Next up is our new club Secretary William Jenks.

We are a bit of a nerd family.  Cynthia and I met in freshman chemistry lab, and I now am a professor in the department of chemistry at Iowa State, while she is an Assistant Director of the Ames Lab, a Department of Energy lab housed at the university.  We have served on boards for local soccer club, sports complex, our church, credit union, etc.  We have three kids: Christopher will graduate from high school this year and is an experienced triathlete on his own.  Timothy and Olivia are in 7th grade and have participated in youth triathlons for the last few years.
I have been involved in triathlon for the last half dozen years or so, having been drawn into it after seeing Chris do a youth tri.  At my first race, the 2006 CyMan, I placed dead last in my age group.  Since then, I’ve actually learned how to ride a bike, and I have come to focus primarily on the half-iron distance.  Those that know me would say I have found my sport, in that triathlon requires no particular hand-eye coordination, and if you race in long enough distance races, you don’t have to go very fast.  My goal for 2013 is a bit of a stretch – to re-qualify for the 70.3 championships while at the top of my age group and then redeem myself in Las Vegas for a silly mistake I made last year.  I have competed in open marathons and all race distances from sprint to iron distance.
William is a part of our growing Ames contingent and is a welcome addition to the board.

Many of you have known Rachelle for the last few years. She has stepped up to take on the Vice President role on the board.

Rachelle picked up triathlon back in 2007 as part of a friendly competition at work. With no bike in her possession, and having never really swam (other than the doggy paddle), the journey to her first race was filled with all sorts of follies. Since then, Rachelle has gone on to complete races of all distances, including 3 iron distance races (Cozumel, Texas, and Rev 3 Cedar Point). She’s been a member of the Rev3 Age Group team since 2010 and enjoys traveling to Rev3 races around the country. (Ask her about her favorite venues…she loves talking about them!)

By day, Rachelle works for John Deere Financial as a Data Analyst, and is the mom of 2 retired racing greyhounds. Outside of triathlon, Rachelle has many other interests including cooking, painting, indoor rock climbing, bike racing and craft beer (tasting, not brewing).
Thank you Rachelle for your hard work!

Jim Thornton is currently president of Triracers of Iowa.  Jim is also a licensed attorney and partner with Thornton, Coy & Huss, PLLC.   He is also very active with his church, Ankeny First United Methodist Church, serving in the past as Co-Chair of Staff Parrish Relations and Finance, and currently serving as leader of the Church Council.  He is also a member of the American Bar Association, Iowa Bar Association and National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys.
In his free time, Jim loves training to compete in triathlons and other running events.  Jim caught the triathlon fever about three and a half years ago and now its in his blood.  During the last race season, Jim had the opportunity to race inIronman 70.3 races in Puerto Rico and Kansas, as well as doing a REV3 70.3 in Wisconsin Dells.  Jim did various other races as well, but the highlight was qualifying for the the Hy-Vee 5150 Championship race in 2013.
For the 2013 race season, Jim is planning on participating in the Ironman 70.3 races in Kansas and Boulder; competing in the Hy-vee 5150 Championship; and then finishing out the race season by doing his first full Ironman in Arizona in November.  Jim’s ultimate goal is to get to the Big Island to race some day.
