Training

Triathlon Training Classes: NOW FOUR PRIME TIME EVENINGS PER WEEK. SIGN UP FOR THE DAYS CONVENIENT FOR YOU. We have the largest, most successful, and best value of any group triathlon training program in the state. Even after a price increase it costs HALF what others charge. We provide coached workouts in swimming, biking, and running. The classes are lead by USA Triathlon Level II coach Mike Garton. Participants refine their skills, get in great shape and make new friends. A one year membership in the TriRacers club is included.

The classes provide adult swim lessons for beginners. The intermediates and experts get coached swim-team-style workouts. We have all levels of athletes up through race-winners returning session after session. Seminars, demos, and guest speakers are scheduled in the class. The typical two hour class includes an hour of swimming plus indoor biking or outdoor running in pace groups. Pace groups include 7, 8, 9, and 10 minutes per mile. Some of the classes late in the session will meet at the Big Creek beach for open water swim training, outdoor biking, and race simulations.

The current session runs through June 19th. There is no problem joining the class after it starts. Sign up for one, two, three, or all nights. Class meets 6:30-8:30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Most participants choose to register for two or one evenings per week but you can register for three or four if you like. Participants can only attend swimming and spinning on the nights they officially registered for. Participants can attend the outdoor runs and technical lectures on any night.

The cost for YMCA members is $100 per registered night. i.e $100 for once a week, $200 for twice a week.... . Non-YMCA members pay $180 for each registered night. Register online, by phone 965-8303, or download the form and bring it to the Ankeny YMCA lobby.

Youth Triathlon Training Classes: We also are the first in the region to have a youth training program.

Cycling:  We started an indoor long (3+ hours) trainer ride series 12/23/2007. Here is an image from our ride 12/30/2007.  We also spin in our twice a week triathlon training classes.  In the Spring, Summer, and Fall the Triracers host group rides.

Swimming: In the summer there are many open water group swims. In fall winter and spring we offer coached swimming in out triathlon training classes. In August and September 2007 we also offered a weekly Triracers Triathlon-Masters Swimming Series.

Individual Coaching: If you want to progress at a faster rate, need accountability, or want to make the most of your limited time, you may want to hire a coach.  Mike Garton is a USA Triathlon Level II coach and USA Cycling Level II coach, ACSM Certified Personal Trainer, and FIST Certified Bike Fitter.
